Facts you should know about perfume

What does the term “Perfume” mean?

The term “perfume” is derived from the Latin phrase ‘per fumum,’ which translates to ‘through smoke.’ The practice of creating and wearing perfumes was refined by the Romans and Arabs approximately 2,500 years ago.

Emperor Nero famously hosted extravagant banquets where rose and jasmine oils flowed from fountains, filling the air with their fragrance. The Arabian tradition of Bakhoor, which involves burning incense and precious woods to scent clothing and surroundings, continues to be popular today.

What was the first perfume?

While the exact identity of the first perfume remains unknown, the earliest recorded chemist and perfume maker is a woman named Tapputi, who lived in Babylonian Mesopotamia around 1200 BCE. She is credited with developing and documenting methods for extracting scents, laying the groundwork for modern perfumery. The oldest known factory dedicated to producing perfumed oils dates back 4,000 years to Cyprus. The Egyptians were pioneers in integrating perfume into their culture 3,000 years ago, creating stone and glass containers for their treasured scented oils and balms.

Can perfume act as an aphrodisiac?

Perfume can certainly enhance the wearer’s allure. Certain fragrances contain ingredients known for their aphrodisiac properties, which can trigger immediate attraction and instinctive sensual reactions.

Ingredients such as Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Vanilla, and Ginger are recognized for their aphrodisiac effects. Cleopatra was aware of Jasmine’s potent qualities and utilized its fragrance to captivate Mark Antony.

Why does perfume change scent throughout the day?

Have you ever noticed how the scent of your perfume evolves over the course of the day? This phenomenon is attributed to the Top, Heart, and Base notes of the fragrance. The interaction between the skin’s chemistry and the perfume’s components causes it to transform over time.

Perfumes consist of a complex blend of top notes, heart notes, and base notes. The top notes are the most fragile and fade quickly, while heart notes, which are often herbal, floral, or spicy, last longer. Base notes, typically made from woods, amber, and musk, linger the longest.

Does perfume expire?

Perfume’s composition can alter over time, which is why it is advisable to use it within 3 to 5 years. Once a bottle is opened and exposed to air, it should ideally be consumed within three years. As fragrances age, they may change significantly; for instance, Eau de Toilette might start to smell predominantly of alcohol after a few years. Generally, perfumes with higher concentrations last longer, both in the bottle and on the skin, with those featuring heavier (oriental) base notes having the longest lifespan.

How should perfume be stored?

When storing perfume, it’s essential to consider factors like humidity, sunlight, and temperature fluctuations, as these can affect its longevity.

To extend the life of your fragrance, keep it upright in a cool, dark place, avoiding areas prone to humidity or extreme temperature changes—making bathrooms or cars unsuitable for storage.

What distinguishes Eau de Parfum from Parfum?

Perfumes are categorized based on their concentration of pure fragrance oil. For example, Eau de Toilette contains about 10% fragrance oil, while Eau de Parfum has around 15%.

Parfum, or pure perfume, boasts a concentration exceeding 20%. Higher concentrations result in longer-lasting scents; a Parfum can last 8 to 12 hours, whereas an Eau de Parfum typically lasts around six hours.

All Zayya Parfums have a 30% Fragrance Oil to Perfume ratio.

Can perfume enhance mood?

Perfume is indeed a powerful mood enhancer, capable of promoting relaxation, elevating spirits, and boosting confidence. Scents can also trigger specific associations and memories, making scent memory a unique experience. Citrus fragrances, in particular, are known to invigorate and refresh.

Why does perfume smell different on different skin types?

Each individual has a unique skin pH and lifestyle factors (such as diet, exercise, and habits) that can influence how a fragrance smells on them compared to others or to a scented card.

If your perfume seems to smell different than before, it might not necessarily indicate that the fragrance has spoiled or changed; it could also reflect changes in your own lifestyle.

What is the difference between a splash bottle and an atomizer?

Most perfumes come in atomizers, which are spray pumps. In contrast, splash bottles lack a spray mechanism and usually do not have an applicator on the top. Splash bottles are commonly used for aftershaves.

Pure perfume oils may also be contained in crystal bottles without a spray feature but include an applicator for dabbing on the skin.

How should perfume be applied?

Perfume is activated by body heat, so it’s best to apply it to pulse points on the skin, such as the wrists, neck, behind the ears, elbows, and behind the knees.

Avoid rubbing your wrists together, as this can alter the perfume’s molecular structure and change its scent.

Additionally, applying perfume to your hair can help it last longer, but it’s advisable to spray the perfume on your brush first to prevent drying effects from the alcohol.

Are perfumes vegan?

Many perfumes contain animal-derived ingredients. If you’re looking for a completely vegan option, it’s wise to verify the product before purchasing.

All Zayya perfumes are 100% vegan.

What are unisex perfumes?

In general, all perfumes can be considered unisex. There are no strict rules dictating that sweet, floral scents are exclusively for women or that deep, woody fragrances are solely for men.

Ultimately, it’s up to the individual to choose how they wish to smell and to curate their personal fragrance collection.

Many women enjoy wearing fragrances traditionally labeled as masculine, and that is perfectly acceptable.
